PHILOSOPHY OF EDUCATION

MUSICIANSHIP, EXPERIENCE, & IDENTITY.

I value the promotion of student development as musicians, and intend to use my position as an educator to help students apply new skills to old concepts, building upon their musical knowledge, and encourage the production of critical thinking skills. As someone who developed my passion for music during my early high school years, I hope to inspire students to find their own personal joy within music, and to encourage reflection and exploration about why music is important to each individual learner.

MUSICIANSHIP

In the music classroom, I emphasize the significance of the student learning experience, or the process of getting from Point A to Point B. Although participation in a music program typically involves performance, the most important thing is that the students are receiving an all-encompassing musical education that helps shape their identities as musicians, and as people. I will encourage students to play a transformative role in their own learning, ask questions, test out new theories and ideas, and share their opinions with their peers.

I intend on being my students’ biggest advocate, not just for musical learning and for the growth of the music program, but for other school-wide issues that could affect other areas of learning (or the fine arts as a general subject). It is my hope that students feel comfortable and safe in the music classroom, that they can be their authentic selves 100% of the time without fear of judgment or discrimination, and that they can always bring questions or concerns to me, knowing that I am here to support them as learners and as developing human beings.

EXPERIENCE

I intend to provide students with a well-rounded musical learning experience in which they learn about and play pieces by composers that reflect their personal identities, while also opening windows to identities that contrast from their own. Repertoire from diverse composers, cultures, and communities will be programmed to ensure that all students are being represented fairly within the music program, and have space to connect music to their own identities. All students have a place in the learning, practice, and performance of music.
